HOW TO ALIGN TYPE

Type should be aligned optically. This means that it should appear “visually” aligned (which is not always numerically aligned).
Letters with a strong vertical stem, align on the margin.
Letters with a curve hang over the margin.
Letters with crossbars (T’s) hang over the margin.
Letters with straight strokes align on the baseline.
Letters with curved strokes dip below the baseline.
Letters with serifs hang over the margin.
Letters with an angled stem hang over the margin.
There is no perfect overlap measurement system. You must use your judgment. -
