😮So the first time I became a manager I was super excited, finally, I could do things my way!!! I could run a design/ developer team as I saw fit and finally, we would produce work we were proud of! But, some weeks in I soon realized that I had not been prepared for this role, at all.
📖As you may know, I'm not one to be discouraged easily! I decided that I would read any book on management, observe those doing a great job and take feedback from my employees on a regular basis.
🎠Here are somethings, I wish I would have read on an Instagram carousel before I took on the mantel of leadership ☺️
___
1️⃣You can’t do everything
2️⃣Schedule 1s on 1s, pronto.
3️⃣Don’t make design critique personal
4️⃣ Focus on strengths not weaknesses
5️⃣People are not machines
6️⃣ Your employees are adults
7️⃣Jr designers must be in meetings
8️⃣Management does not equal Leadership
👨🏫A manager keeps his team on deadline, follows company policy and doesn’t challenge the status quo.
🧙♂️A great design leader will push back, protect their designers, gives them space to grow, ask why and ultimately, catalyzes creativity.
